Screen Printing Column (47)

~Heat and cold are not just for humans~

In recent years, extreme weather events have occurred around the world.
Even in Japan, summers are extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 40°C, and winters are extremely harsh, with temperatures below freezing in many places.
Well, the influence of the temperature difference has a big influence not only on humans but also on screen printing.

Grease is used in screen printers so that each drive unit moves smoothly.
As the temperature drops, the grease hardens.
Therefore, if the temperature of the screen printing machine becomes extremely low, the movement becomes unstable.
However, in general, there is no need to worry about driving the screen printing machine in the screen printing environment.

what about the screen version? The frames used for screen plates are generally made of aluminum.
The length of metal changes in proportion to the temperature, depending on the material.
Sensors such as thermometers are made using this property.
When you have a metal lid on a bottle at home that won't come off, warming it will make it easier to remove the lid.
This is also because the thicker the lid, the larger the lid due to the thermal expansion of the metal.

By the way, the dimensional change of a metal rod due to heat can be expressed by the following formula.
L=L0(1+αt)
L: Length after temperature rise L0: Original length α: Coefficient of thermal expansion t: Temperature difference
The coefficient of thermal expansion (α) is different for each metal, and the larger this number, the greater the change in length with respect to temperature.
The table below shows the expansion coefficients of typical metals.
When calculating from this data how the dimensions of aluminum actually change...
The coefficient of linear expansion of aluminum is 23 x 0.000001/K, so if it is a 1000 mm aluminum bar,
If it rises by 1 degree, it becomes longer by 0.023mm (23μm).

Fine line printing possible with screen printing is about 20 μm.
The width of the circuit pattern of a touch panel is said to be 50 to 90 μm.
Large screen printers also use plates of 1000 mm square or larger.
Temperature changes cannot be ignored.

Heat and cold have a great effect on screen printing as well.
